Cold & Wintry, will it snow?

-

The weather has turned decidedly chilly in the last day or so with many of us waking up to a frost. The cold weather will be with us through much of this week and into the weekend too.

High pressure centred over Greenland and low pressure over Scandinavia has drawn in colder north or north-easterly winds.

Low pressure dropping south to the west of the UK and then eastwards to the south of the UK may bring a period of rain/sleet or snow into the far south of England on Thursday/Friday but the general consensus is for this low to miss the UK, instead we draw in easterly winds which may bring wintry showers across eastern Scotland and to eastern counties of England. It’s possible small features or disturbances will bring longer spells of snowfall but at this stage it’s impossible to predict exactly where.

For the vast majority of us it’ll be a largely dry, bright but cold week of weather with frosts being the only “white” on the ground for the majority.

The highest chance of snowfall through this week can be seen on this graphic below, significant snowfall is not expected but given the uncertainty this could change at relatively short notice.

Into next week there’s a fair amount of uncertainty. It’s likely we’ll see a return to less cold Atlantic driven weather with low pressure pushing across the UK but exactly how this transition occurs and when needs to be firmed up, we could see a period of snowfall as weather fronts attempt to push into the colder air established across the UK.

Keep an eye on the Status page for further updates on any possible snowfall.
